Danvers Holten-Richmond Middle School
Historical Renovation and Addition
(Completed October 2005) Construction Cost (04/05): $22,920,000 Total Area: 95,000 square feet (existing) and 53,000 SF addition The Holten-Richmond Middle School Project integrated two historically relevant existing buildings built in 1929 and 1931, that were originally the junior high school and high school. While it was a priority to maintain the historic character of the buildings, the interior space was completely reconfigured to meet modern educational requirements. Selected demolition was performed at the rear of the existing building to incorporate a contemporary addition that utilized design cues from the traditional original structure. The restricted site bordered major roads and parklands, so expansion room was limited. Design options combined educational programming, daylighting, sufficiently sized core facilities, sustainable-design elements, parking and efficient vehicular circulation within the existing site boundaries. |
